This Heritage Week, people will have an opportunity to visit the stunning walled garden of Salthill House, Mountcharles.

Built in the mid-18th century as part of the Conyngham Estate, Salthill House overlooks majestic Donegal Bay, just outside Mountcharles. Over almost four decades, owner Elizabeth Temple has patiently transformed its 1.03-acre walled garden into a magical space by concentrating on plants that thrive in its northerly environment.

The result is an authentic country house walled garden, skillfully planted with a combination of perennials and shrubs, interspersed with vegetables, herbs and fruit trees. Outside the walls is a new area of woodland, while the gravel avenue, curved sweep and yards are raked into swirling curvilinear patterns that recall the abstract la Tène ornamentation that influenced Irish early Christian art.

Tours of Salthill House Walled Garden in association of Historic Houses of Ireland continue daily until August 20, from 2pm to 6pm. Entry is €6 per person. The garden is located at Salthill House, Salthill Demesne, Mountcharles F94 H524.

Car parking is available. Further information is available by calling 087 7988078 or emailing etemple@magee1866.com
