Eithne Eithne Ni Cumhnail attending a training camp at Ducketts grove
A commemorative talk will take place in Garradh Colm Cille (beside new Falcarragh Hall) to commemorate the anniversary of the death of republican activist/cuman na mBan and Gaelic league member Eithne Ni Cumhnail (Etna Coyle) who died in 1985.
The event will begin with the laying of wreaths at the Eithne Ní Cumhnail memorial plaque situated at Killult, at the bottom of Falcarragh hill, on the Gortahork side, at 5.30pm on Easter Saturday, April 19.
A talk will begin afterwards explaining Eithne’s route to becoming an active participant in the war of independence @ 6pm with refreshments afterwards. This talk will be given by descendants of Eithne’s Liam Barry (Baile na Creige) and Dr Méadhbha Ní Bhaoil (An Sean Baille). Eithne Ní Cumhnail deserves recognition for her life-long pursuit of a free and independent Ireland for which she suffered harassment at the hands of the Black and Tans/ RIC and was involved in two high profile escapes from prison after being given three years penal servitude jail term by free state forces for aiding IRA members.

Her bravery knew no bounds, and by showing that, she was instrumental in carrying secretive instructions/plans between various IRA detachments leading up to and during the war of independence. It is important that women who played such a vital role in the formation of this state should not be forgotten.
All are welcome as there are many who are unaware of Eithne place in the context of local and national Irish history.
