The Tír Boghaine Community Gardening group celebrated the Fruits of their Labours in the Carrick Daycare Centre on Tuesday.

This was a day acknowledging all the gardening knowledge and dry stone wall skills they have acquired over the past 16 months and the FETAC courses they participated in.

This project has given everyone a sense of purpose and is of a great benefit to both physical and mental health - it’s being called ‘the Green Gym’! It also has the added benefit of engaging with the clients in Carrick Daycare Centre.

This was a wonderful and joyous occasion with friends, family and the Daycare Centre clients, resident and non resident, participating and joining in all the fun and music supplied by John Joe McBrearty.

A large crowd attended the official launch of the Clochan by Sarah McGill, the eldest lady in the parish and they then were able to observe the successful labours of the community gardening project evidenced in the surrounding area.

The grounds attached to the Carrick Daycare Centre have been enhanced by the gardening project and the Clochan which have been designed to complement each other. Tír Boghaine Teo and Carrick Daycare Centre invite everyone to take a stroll around the garden and see for yourselves.

Tír Boghaine Teo would like to acknowledge the support of the HSE West, the VEC and Udarás na Gaeltachta in funding this project and the tutors Elizabeth Temple (garden) and Ronan Crehan, (Clochan) for their enthusiasm and commitment.

None of this would have been possible without the energy and passion of the Gardening Group themselves and the support of the staff of the Carrick Daycare Centre.

This has been a wonderful success story bringing members from three parishes together on a continuous basis since April 2010. There is real community spirit and commitment and a sense of achievement, so much so that they are entering the Chelsea Flower show in 2012, well entering it as a group anyway, but nothing would surprise the writer with this project.
