The newly constituted Board of Directors of Donegal Local Development Company (DLDC) recently convened at its regularly schedule monthly meeting.
Five new directors were elected as others stood down after three years of service. The new directors are: John Cannon, Janet Gaynor, Cllr. John Meehan, Mark Murray and Johnny Ward.
The development company was founded on the model of social partnership and has been delivering a variety of programmes aimed at promoting and fostering social, economic, cultural and environmental development at a local level amongst communities in that portion of Donegal excluding Inishowen and the Gaeltacht. The company has been in operation since its incorporation 1995 and has, over its lifetime, administered community and private project developers supports to a value in excess of €20M.
Following the outcomes of the national “cohesion” process which streamlined the structures of local development delivery in the Republic, the company’s Articles of Association required those Directors who had served an initial term of three years to stand down. Such Directors were eligible for one further term of three years. Directors nominated by specified nominating bodies were appointed. Directors representing the Community and Voluntary sector pillar of social partnership were required to stand for election by those community and voluntary groups registered with the County Development Board and who had confirmed their intention to vote.Following the nominating process by organisations the following Directors were appointed:
Jim Slevin (IBEC), John Starrett (IFA), John Cannon (TEAGASC), Pat Coyle (FAS), Ethna Diver (Irish Environmental Network), Janet Gaynor (HSE), P.J. Hannon (ICTU), Mary Ann Kane (VEC), Cllr. Sean McEniff (Donegal County Council), Cllr. Patrick McGowan (Donegal County Council), Barney McLaughlin (Donegal County Council), Cllr. John Meehan (Ballyshannon Town Council), Mark Murray (DSP) and Michael Tunney (Donegal County Enterprise Board).

North Donegal Community Network Directors Geraldine Boyce, Martin McBride and Patrick Sweeney; East Donegal Community Forum Director Siobhan McLaughlin and the South Donegal Community Forum Directors Michael Mullan and Johnny Ward.
Directors standing down following three years of service or retiring were Molly Reynolds South Donegal Community Forum, P.J. Molly (TEAGASC) James McClean (East Donegal Community Forum) and Cllr. Dessie Larkin (Letterkenny Town Council).
The new Directors are, John Cannon, Janet Gaynor, Cllr. John Meehan, Mark Murray and Johnny Ward.
Speaking on behalf of the Board, Jim Slevin, who was elected for his final term as Chairman stated “while we are sorry to see the considerable expertise of those who have served the company so well being lost through retirements, we heartily welcome the important skill base of those new Directors joining the Board. The work of the company is extremely demanding in terms of meeting the development needs of the catchment, particularly in the times in which we live. I am certain that with the combined efforts of our hard working staff, our Board of Directors and the participation of the community, DLDC can continue to achieve great things”.
