One of Carrick’s eldest and best-loved residents has passed away.

Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ McNelis of Straleel, died on Friday, April 27. She was laid to rest on Monday, April 30 following Requiem Mass in St Columba’s Church, Carrick.

Her 100th birthday was celebrated with a surprise party last August in the Blue Haven, Kilcar.

Lizzie was originally from Loughros Point. She spent 6-7 years working in Killybegs where she met her late husband Francis. When they married, the couple moved back to the farm in Straleel.

As well as her work on and her love, Lizzie was renowned for her tremendous knitting skills. Her mind remained sharp and active all her days and she remained living in her own home right up to her 100th year.

She will be sorely missed by her family, extended family and wide-ranging circle of friends.
