Missing stars caused McKenna Cup ecllipse

Derry 2-10, Donegal 1-8

Although they held an interval lead of 1-5 to 1-3, Donegal, defending their Dr. McKenna Cup honours at Dean McGlinchey Park, Ballinascreen on Sunday, showed such unsteady form in some sectors of defence that it was no surprise when Derry scored an easy goal to give them the honours.

With many players missing, the Co. chairman announced, following a meeting of the Executive on Sunday evening, that the county would have first call on the services of players in the future. This means, in effect, that players selected either on the first fifteen or reserves, will serve a six month’s suspension should they fail to travel.

Shortage of priests in Raphoe causing concern

A growing shortage of priests in the Raphoe Diocese was referred to by Most Rev. Dr. McFeely, Bishop of Raphoe, when he addressed the congregation following the Confirmation of 101 children in St. Mary’s Church, Killymard, on Sunday.

His Lordship appealed to parents and others to impress on the young people the dignity of the priesthood.

Dr. McFeely also told the congregation that serious overcrowding in Killymard church at Masses brought home to them the need for increased accommodation. There was a plan to extend the sanctuary and possibly the church itself, and if the cost should prove to be substantial it would be better to build a new church.
