The death has taken place at the North West Hospice of Sean ‘JR’ Rooney, St. Benildus Avenue, Ballyshannon.
A former caretaker at the De La Salle College and Coláiste Cholmcille, the 68-year-old was well known and highly regarded throughout the town.
He had also worked at Jack Grimes’ bakery before starting as a caretaker.
Cllr. Pat O’Malley said he was “a nice person, always in good form and quick with a joke”.
There was a very large turnout at the funeral yesterday morning in St. Patrick’s Church. The chief celebrant, Fr Declan Boyce, was joined by Fr. Cathal Ó Fearrai, Fr Gerard Daly and Fr Frank McManus.
The cortege proceeded down St Benildus Avenue and past Coláiste Cholmcille where there was a Guard of Honour.
Remains are being taken to Dublin for cremation at Mount Jerome cemetery, Harold’s Cross this morning.
Deceased is survived by his wife Angela, sons Darren, John and Tony, daughters Sandra and Caroline, two grandchildren and extended circle of family and friends.
