The news of the death of Michael McGrath at the weekend came as a shock to the communities of Belleek and Ballyshannon, especially those connected with the Donegal Democrat.

Michael was one of the Democrat’s longest serving employees, working as a typesetter for over 40 years before his retirement in the late 1990s.

From the Commons in Belleek, Michael was known for his quiet and unassuming nature. He had a great interest in sport, most notably horse racing, and was an accomplished footballer in his younger days.

His remains will be removed from his family home this morning (Tuesday) at 10.30am to St Patrick’s Church, Belleek for 11am funeral Mass, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Michael is survived by his wife, Margo, five sons and four daughters, and brother Jim.
