The Late Packie Moore: Downstrands lost one of its most respected and popular senior citizens following the passing of Packie Moore, Narin, on 16th January last.
The late Packie was in his 89th year and had been in ill health for a number of months, but always keep the bright side out. He loved nothing more than to have the house full of family, neighbours and friends and often sang a song to keep the get-together going.
He loved to converse with young and old, and had a great memory for events during his lifetime.
He was born in Narin, and lived there all his life. He worked on the family farm which he enjoyed. He was a remarkable gaelic footballer and was a member of the Ardara GAA team, and also played for the Lilly Whites.
He married his wife Molly (nee Herron, Ardara) on January 16th, 1956, 57 years to the day of his death. They raised five of a family whom he adored, but sadly, they lost their beloved son Thomas in a fishing tragedy off Rosbeg in 1998.
The late Packie was waked at his home, and hundreds of people from all over Ireland attended the wake to pay their respects to a much loved character.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Philip Daly at St. Conal’s Church, Kilclooney and burial took place in the ajoining graveyard. Deepest sympathy to his heartbroken wife Molly and family, his daughters, Mary Plunkett (Galway), Michelle Coughlan (New York) Leonie (at home) and Pat in Inver, his sons-in-law, Tom Plunkett and Paul Coughlan, daughter-in-law, Kate and all his grandchildren.
