The Cope House, Killybegs, one of the town’s most popular pubs and its last remaining nightclub, has closed its doors.
A post was put up on the pub’s Facebook page last Saturday night, saying that night’s disco would be the last.
The post continued: “Hope you all can make it in to give us one great send off...Thanks to all for your custom and support over the last number of years. We’ve had many memorable nights and here’s to one last session! Let’s make it the best yet!”
Although attempts were made to contact the owner, Damien Dowd, no comment could be obtained from him at the time of going to print.
Thomas Pringle TD said the pub had been closing during the week for the past few months, only opening on weekends. “I’ve heard conflicting reports that it was closed for good and that it would be re-opening in a few months, that there’s someone interested in buying it, but nothing definite.”
Noel O’Donnell, Chairman of the Killybegs and District Chamber of Commerce, however, said the business was “definitely closed”.
He added: “It’s been on the market for the last good while, a year or two, as far as I’m aware.
“This is yet another blow to the town and shows again how hard it is for businesses to survive. This news means the loss of 4 or 5 jobs, added to the loss of about 40 jobs with the recent closure of the Bayview Hotel and a further 10 jobs when John Cunningham’s supermarket closed its doors a few weeks ago.”
