Midnight walk: Get a good pair of walking shoes or boots on for the annual midnight walk organised by the St John Bosco Centre takes place on June 23rd. This is a great event and attracted huge numbers last time out. It is a lovely event to participate in and of course raise funds for the St. John Bosco Community Centre, which continues to provide valuble space to a wide array of sports and general community activities. Fund raiser: the Parents Association in Gaelscoil na gCeithre Maistrí (Donegal Town Gaelscoil) have organised a ‘Night at the Races’ in Dom’s Pier 1 to raise money for equipment for the school. The evening kicks off at 8.30pm. The RACE NIGHT will consist of 8 races with 8 horses in each race. You can sponsor a race at the cost of €50 per race; this means that you can name the race with your name or your company name, whichever applies. Or you can purchase a horse at the cost of €10 per horse, you can name your own horse and the winning horse of each race will receive a small prize. Those that wish to sponsor a Race or Horse should contact the Parent Association committee by calling or texting 0861666803 as soon as possible and this will be arranged. This will be a great nights craic and definitely one not to be missed!
Down Syndrome Ireland: There will be a stall on the Donegal Town Food and Craft Market in the Centre of Donegal Town this Saturday June 16th from 10am. The stall will be selling ice cream to raise money for Down Sydrome Ireland. Everyonme is more than welcome, pease come along and support if you can.
Donegal Tidy Towns: While people continue to litter their own town there remain the dedicated few who go out and do there best to clear it up, on a voluntary basis. The Donegal Tidy Town Committee Meet every Monday on the Diamond at 8pm throughout the next two months (weather permitting). For further information, please telephone, 074 9723760 (office hours). Sinn Féin Lotto: There was no jackpot winner last week of the county wide lotto. The winning numbers for Wednesday 6th June 2012 were; 3: 11: 18: 24. Fund Raising Trip: The Donegal Community Band will be holding a fund raising trip on Donegal Bay Waterbus on Wednesday 27th June 2012. You can join Daniel O’ Donnell and his wife Majella for High Tea on the High Seas! This is quite literally the trip of a life time and the tickets are only €35, which went on sale from the Waterbus Office on 9th June. This is an amazing achievement by the local group and a huge well done for pulling this off! Maith thu.
GAA: The Four Masters’ under 10’s were hosted by Aodh Ruadh, Ballyshannonon on Saturday 9th June, when they took part in the M. Shannon Memorial Cup. There were great displays of football from all teams particpating, with all participating teams playing brilliantly on the day. Aodh Ruadh won the cup when they were successful against Four Masters in the final. It was a great achievement by the young Gael’s from the Masters’ to get to the final. A huge well done to the coaches for the immense effort and dedication that they put into the development of the under age players and also to all the parents who provide the encouragement and enthusiasm which drives the kids on. Great thanks must go to Aodh Ruadh who laid on a fine amount of fresh food for all present. The U8’s meanwhile were in a blitz with neighbouring clubs at Tir Chonaill Park also on Saturday and they continue to show incredible skill and determination on the pitch for their young years. Football training for the under 10’s takes place on Tuesday evenings 6.30 -7.30 and for the under 8’s on Wednesday’s 6.30 - 7.30 (boys born 2004/2005). Training takes place on the state of the art all-weather pitch. Hurling also takes place at Tir Chonaill park on Friday’s from 6pm - 7pm. The effort put in by alll involved in the club is second to none. The GAA, as always, continue to play a crucial role within our communities and the facilities developed at Tir Chonaill Park reflect the incredible work put in by this voluntary organisation. Get your kids involved in the local club and watch how beneficial it is for them, as they learn new skills and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. Farmers Market: The Donegal Town Farmers’ Market will take place this Saturday 16th June between 10am and 3pm on the Diamond. They will be joined this week by local young people from Fóroige who have organised a team selling Ice cream to raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland. This is a very worthy cause and people are asked to come along and give their support. There will be the usual high standard of local fresh produce and crafts, all created by local people. This is a local community project with the specific aims of creating and sustaining small local indigenous businesses, bringing people into the centre of the town and providing a lovely event for people across the whole community to attend and enjoy. Please try to try to pop along to sample some of the delights on offer and to support the local charity stall. Come along and soak up the unique atmosphere it creates in the centre of the town.
Family Resource: The Donegal Family Resource Centre has released a list of Summer Courses and activities which will be taking place over the next couple of months. On 3rd July at 7pm there will be a Student Grant Information Seminar. The application process has changed significantly and the seminar will give information on how to make the online application for third level grant assistance. Starting on the 26th June a six week course Living Life to the Full, commences. This is FREE Life Skills Programme, which will be facilitated by AWARE. This free six week course will work with you to address such issues as stress, the loss of a job or self-esteem. This free six-week programme is based on the principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Starting time is 7.30pm-9pm. Booking is essential, contact, 074 9725337. Another free course opportunity, specifically for people who wish to up-skill and who are in part-time or full-time work is presently recruiting students. The course is called Skills for Work and it will provide Basic Computer skills, such as, writing letters, making posters, internet and email, pay bills online and skype. It is 3 hours per week for 12 weeks. For further information call Margaret on 087 7908127. The course is Facilitated in VEC Donegal Town. Also, don’t forget that the great initiative which is the Green Exercise Walking Group will continue to meet each Thursday throughout the summer at the St. John Bosco Centre at 10am for a guided walk, with refreshments at the end and all for the cost of €5 per person. Parent Stop, a service for families who may need some advice on issues of concern to them is available in the office on Upper Main Street each Tuesday from 9.30 – 5pm. Camogie: U14 Camogie girls started their league on Friday evening and had home match against Carndonagh, which they won 2:1 to 0:0. Girls played really well - weather was awful and a good few came up from U12s and really helped the team. Both goals were scored by Neasa Gorell and the point by Aoife Regan. U12s start their league this weekend with an away fixture to Carndonagh.
Four Masters G.A.A. Club: The €50 winners in the Annual Lotto for Week 48 were Gerry Caldwell, Main Street and Sean Gillespie, Brookfield. The numbers drawn were 1, 14, 19 & 24 with the jackpot now standing at €2,200. The final draw of the 2011/2012 Annual Lotto takes place on Monday June 25th so members are reminded to have their subscription paid in full before then in order to be included in the draw for 10 prizes to the value of €3,000 on the night. The next monthly meeting of Bord na nOg has been rescheduled to Wednesday June 20th at 8.30 pm in the Abbey Hotel.
RNLI Raft Race: The annual RNLI Raft Race and Blessing of Boats will take place at the Big Pier, Mountcharles at 4pm on Sunday, July 1st. Skiff Racing involving the Donegal Town Rowing Club is a new inclusion in the event. The RNLI saved 84 lives around the Donegal coast in 2011 so a contribution of €10 to the Lifeboats is respectfully requested from each Raft Race entrant. For road safety, access to the event is from the Donegal Town side of the Pier and leaving via the opposite (Salthill) direction. The Bundoran RNLI Lifeboat and crew will attend (if not on rescue) and the Donegal Bay Cycling Club will pay a courtesy call.
Townawilly Community Centre: On Tuesday 26th June 2012 from 11.00am – 1.00pm. A coffee / tea morning will be held in Townawilly Community Centre this Tuesday the 26th June, from 11.00am – 1.00pm. A great time was had by everyone on 22nd May last & it was encouraging to see such great attendance. A massive thank you to everyone who attended as €109 was raised for the North West Simon Community, a charity for the homeless. If you haven’t managed to attend a coffee morning yet, we would love to see you there. Stay for a quick cuppa or a leisurely chat! This will be the last coffee morning before we break for the summer holidays. Date for the diary 26th June, 11.00am-1.00pm
