A member of the Slane club in Meath, Gough refereed the All-Ireland SFC finals in both 2019 and 2023, both contested by Dublin and Kerry.

He was also the man in the middle as Donegal won the National Football League Division 1 crown in March, when they defeated Kerry 3-20 to 2-10 at Croke Park, and was linesman for Donegal’s last match in the regulation series, beating Monaghan 3-20 to 3-16 at St Tiernach’s Park in Clones.
