Martin Regan was glad his Naomh Conaill side got back to winning ways in Division 1, but sights are still firmly set on the championship later in the season

Naomh Conaill manager Martin Regan was happy that his side had got back to winning ways following Sunday’s narrow win over Glenfin, in Pairc Taobhoige.

Daniel Gildea and Tiernan Ward scored the goals, and Seamus Corcoran, Neil Francis Boyle, Odhran Doherty, Anthony Thompson, and Eoghan McGettigan were among the point scorers in the 2-15 to 1-15 win over the locals.

“It was good to get over the line at the final whistle,” Regan said.

“We had a bad start to the league, losing two of our three opening games, so we knew coming up the road here today it was important to get points on the board.

“Glenfin got off to a good start and went four up, and indeed it could have been up more. “They also had a goal chance they fisted over for a point, and had another narrow wide shortly after that fisted point.”

Glenfin led 0-4 to 0-0 score after eight minutes courtesy of points from Oisin McGlynn, a Shaun Ward two-pointer, and Stephen Ward posting the points for the locals.

Naomh Conaill supporters had to wait until the 11th minute for their first flag, a fisted point from Seamus Corcoran. Neil Francis Boyle and Odhran Doherty quickly added two more points before Daniel Gildea rattled the Glenfin net for Naomh Conaill’s opening goal.

Tiernan Ward, three minutes later, struck for Naomh Conaill’s second goal.

And the men in blue and white went in four up 2-7 to 0-9 at half-time.

“We found our groove after they went four up and we scored two goals before half-time. Daniel and Tiernan did well to score the goals.

“The goals were huge scores and gave us a bit of a cushion at half-time. We were four up at half-time and got a good start to the second half. Daniel and Eoghan (McGettigan) kicked two points to go six up.

“We then had a bad patch, and they scored a few points and we conceded a bad goal near the end. It really went down to the wire in the last few minutes.

“But it is what you expect when you play Glenfin here. The one thing you can be sure of is that they will not lie down, and they will fight to the bitter end.

“But we responded well to the goal, and Tiernan, Neil Francis, and Eoghan McGettigan kicked three late points to get us over the line.

It is a matter of kicking on now and picking up league points and getting ready for the championship for Martin Regan and Naomh Conaill.

“The bigger picture is the championship and it is a matter of taking every game as they come and improving from game to game, and giving boys a chance to put their hands up for a place in the championship team.”
