With the third weekend of the Donegal Senior Football Championship taking place last weekend, the DonegalLive Sports team have selected their Team of the Week.

Honourable mentions include: Eoghan McGettigan (Naomh Conaill), Shaun Patton (St Eunan’s), Domhnall Mac Giolla Bhríde (Gaoth Dobhair), Jack Hegarty (Kilcar), Karl McGlynn (Glenfin), Gavin Gallagher (Sean MacCumhaills), Hugh McFadden (Killybegs).

Damien McGowan (Dungloe): Making his championship debut, McGowan had two early two-point free attempts go wide, but he put in a brilliant second-half showing, ending with seven points, including three two-point frees and a ‘45. There wasn’t much the 22-year-old could do about either goal, especially the first after making a good initial save, but he made a huge save from Owen Bamforth when there were just two points in the game.

Mark Curran (Dungloe): It was a brilliant defensive display from Dungloe as a whole, but Curran was tasked with keeping Patrick McElwee quiet. The Downings forward had 20 points in his first two games, and Curran kept him to just two frees. The county panellist helped turnover a couple of balls and set up some attacks for the Rosses Park men.

Gary McFadden (Gaoth Dobhair): McFadden was part of a Gaoth Dobhair side that forced MacCumhaills into some good long-range scoring as they rarely let them get close to goal. The full back won possession a number of times, especially in the first half.

Paddy McGrath (Ardara): The 2012 All-Ireland winning veteran was once again one of his side’s best players as Ardara picked up their first SFC win, at the third attempt, over Aodh Ruadh. Got on the scoresheet against the Ballyshannon men in Pearse Memorial Park and also turned over a number of possessions with that bottling-up presence that also leaves men well rattled as he leaves with the ball.

Aaron Neely (Dungloe): Neely was another key figure in the Dungloe defence that kept Downings to a goal and two points from play, helping to turn over possession on multiple occasions. The county U20 player also kicked three points from wing back in an impressive all-round display.

Ronan Gallagher (Downings): It wasn’t to be for Downings in Rosses Park, but Gallagher impressed with his ball carrying and influence for the visitors. He kicked two brilliant two-point frees and added a penalty in a good display.

.

Ryan McShane (Kilcar): McShane won the ball back for Kilcar a couple of times in their battle with Glenfin, and an impressive first half performance helped them go well clear. He also provided a threat going forward, linking up well, and should probably have added an early goal.

.

Eoin McHugh (Kilcar): An emotional day for the Kilcar man as the Towney side played their first game since the tragic passing of his parents, James and Noreen McHugh. McHugh captained his side and kicked a brace of two-pointers in the opening six minutes as his side went into a nine-point lead that Glenfin could never recover. Also did well as Kilcar won the midfield battle.

Kieran Gallagher (Naomh Conaill): Gallagher came back into the fray last term after a number of seasons out. But exposed to a high-performance environment under Jim McGuinness and Donegal, he looks like he’s going to kick on to an even more impressive level this term. Nailed a brilliant two-pointer, 0-3 overall, in a fine win over Termon.

Cailum Malley (Ardara): Malley was a real threat for Ardara with his direct running going forward and impacting features as he landed four points in his side’s crucial four-point SFC win over Aodh Ruadh. He also dug in at the back and managed to not only help turn over ball but get forward at lightning pace in the process.

Jamie Keegan (Sean MacCumhaills): Keegan carried a lot of ball, and his darting runs at the Gaoth Dobhair defence helped MacCumhaills to an away draw. The Ballybofey man kicked four points, including a classy two-pointer and again was a huge influence for his side.

Reid Kelly (Glenswilly): Glenswilly might have been without talisman Michael Murphy at the weekend but others stepped up to make sure a third SFC win in a row was secured, this time at the expense of Killbegs. Kelly grabbed three points from play with crucial interventions made at a time when the game was still in the melting pot late on.

Shea Malone (Naomh Conaill): Malone - a lot like Naomh Conaill in general at the weekend - was simply awesome as the Boys in Blue dished out a 20-point drubbing to Termon in Glenties. The county ace posted 1-6, all from play, but was a constant threat throughout in what was a thoroughly impressive flexing of the reigning champions’ muscle.

Oisin Doherty (Four Masters): Doherty was in brilliant shooting form for Four Masters in their win over St Michael’s. He nailed ten points and was just a constant threat, from play and from frees, as Barry Dunnion’s team now look forward to a trip to Kilcar in this weekend’s standalone SFC fixture.

Eoin McGeehin (St Eunan’s): McGeehin and St Eunan’s moved to five points in the standings at the weekend with a comfortable win over Naomh Columba. The flame-haired attacker hit 1-4 from play, including a fine two-point effort in O’Donnell Park. Eunan’s will have to improve however, as they now turn attention to a fourth-round away clash with St Michael’s.
