World and European medalist David Gillick has been confirmed as the special guest at the 49th Donegal Sports Star Awards later this month.

Gillick won Ireland's first sprinting gold medal in 75 years at the 2005 European Indoor Championships in Madrid, in a personal best time of 46.30 and he successfully defended his European Indoor title, running a new Irish record of 45.52 two years later with Patsy McGonagle of Finn Valley Athletic Club the team's manager.

The Dubliner previously won a bronze medal as part of the Irish 4x400 metres relay team along with Robert Daly, David McCarthy and Gary Ryan, at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships. Gillick is currently an athletics analyst for RTÉ Sport.

“I am looking forward to it, these events are so important and it’s good to have it after Christmas so it doesn’t get lost in the madness," Gillick said. “A lot of people have put in a lot of effort and to be welcoming a Dub up is nice as well!

“From my standpoint from playing GAA, Donegal always had that tradition but then in athletics, there were always athletes coming through in Donegal and the people there from Patsy McGonagle to Teresa McDaid and there are loads more who have given their heart and soul to athletics and the Olympians mentioned there are really important to highlight.

“There was someone in a school or local club that enticed those people to get out and run a lap or something and that’s why it is important to celebrate these things.”

The Donegal Sports Star Awards will take place on Friday, January 31, in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny. Previous special guests included 1956 1500m Olympic gold medal winner Ronnie Delaney; Donegal's 2012 All-Ireland winning manager Jim McGuinness; former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given; Olympic bronze medal winning walker Rob Heffernan; 1997 World Snooker Champion Ken Doherty; RTE’s Sean O’Rourke, three-time Olympian Meave Kyle and Patsy McGonagle, Irish Olympic Team Manager.
