Seven things: Wildlife sanctuaries around the county

Donegal is home to a diverse landscape which hosts ten nature reserves displaying a significantly varied range of wildlife and natural habitat such as woodlands and wetlands

For all those who are interested in birds, there are several bird-watching trails that can be availed of across the county such as Green Island, forest loops and Slieve League Cliffs just to name a few.

However, Inch Wildfowl Reserve is the focus here as it is a wetland wildlife refuge. Inch Wildfowl Reserve is located in Burt, around 8 km south of Buncrana, east of Lough Swilly. Wildfowl are considered to be birds that live near lakes and rivers.

The Inch Wildfowl Reserve provides a natural habitat for a great variety of waders, ducks, terns, gulls, and wintering waterfowl, including swans and geese.

The reserve is an 8km looped path around Inch Lake with bird hides along the route. The top five birds that have been spotted there are the Whooper Swan, the Eurasian Oystercatcher, the Eurasian Curlew, the Great Black-backed Gull and the European Goldfinch.

The Inch Wildfowl Reserve is largely important as it serves as a stopover point for migratory birds that travel from three continents
