2006 All-Ireland quarter-final
August 5
Donegal 1-10 Cork 1-11
Certainly, one that got away. Following on from Brian McEniff's fifth and final tenure as Donegal manager, Brian McIver was the man in charge in 2006 and his side showed form in Ulster before losing out to Armagh for the fifth time in five seasons. Rory Kavanagh, first in the panel in 2001, scored 1-2 on his first championship start against Down in the Ulster SFC quarter-final in a 1-12 to 1-11 win and Donegal continued that form to defeat Derry 1-11 to 0-11, with Kavangh scoring five and Michael Doherty 1-4, with the 22-year-old from Four Masters forward left with both knee and facial injuries after he collided with Derry's Paul Cartin.
Having lost the provincial final 1-9 to 0-9 against the Orchard County, Donegal overcome Fermanagh 0-11 to 0-8 in the fourth round qualifier to set up a date with Munster champions Cork.
With the fixture moved to August Bank Holiday Saturday at 4pm to accommodate the travelling Cork support, played after Kerry's win over Armagh, Donegal started excellently, leading 1-5 to 0-0 with Christy Toye the goalscorer. But James Masters and Fintan Goold reduced the gap to two by the break, after John Hayes had netted a 12th-minute penalty for Cork. Level at 1-10 apiece with eight to play, it was Cork who scored the winner, through centre-back Ger Spillane two minutes into injury time.
“In the second half we dominated for long spells and had the majority of possession but again we couldn’t work the scores," McIver said afterwards. We had a chance in the end for a draw but it just wasn’t to be."
