Catching the eye: Players to watch in this year’s Football Championships

With county players not playing for spells of the All-County Football League, there were a number of stand-out players who have yet to make their senior inter-county bow that will be looking to take their good form into the football championships in the coming weeks

Johnny McGroddy (Downings)
Johnny McGroddy had the most spectacular finish to the All-County Football League when compared to any other player in the county, with his last ditch goal direct from a free-kick for Downings against Malin on Sunday last sealing the Division 2 title on a 1-16 to 1-15 scoreline.
Last year he helped Downings to the Donegal JFC crown and onto the Ulster JFC Club final, where they lost out to Denn from Cavan. A bit like his club, his form has continued right through into the new year with only a minimal break last Christmas. He was a vital part of Donegal’s U-20 team this year under Gary Duffy and before Downings’ first top flight excursion since 1991 next season, will be a vital player alongside his stablemate Lorcan Connor in the Donegal IFC.
