Seven things: Movies that were shot in Donegal

Due to the county's beautiful and unique landscape, Donegal has become an increasingly popular destination for some of Hollywood's finest

Cry From The Sea
Cry From The Sea is a romantic feature film set in the 1920s which stars Hollywood legend Aidan Quinn alongside Emily Beecham, Sarah Bolger, Keith McErlean and David Pearse. It was directed by Vic Sarin and is due to be released later this year.

Malin Head was the filming location for Cry From the Sea

Cry from the Sea is set post-WW1 and the Irish Civil War. The movie centres on Edith, an enigmatic American widow who visits an Irish island near where her childhood boyfriend drowned. This is when she encounters Seamus, a solitary lighthouse keeper who is at loggerheads with the island locals because of a personal tragedy he blames on them. Edith’s arrival forces Seamus out of his intensive grief.  He bonds with Edith, much to the annoyance of his loyal housekeeper who has silently loved him for years. The resulting love triangle brings unexpected changes that impact all their lives.

Filming took place in August and September of last year and was expected to be completed in October. Filming for Cry From The Sea predominantly took place on the Inishowen Penisula with some scenes being shot at lighthouses in Mayo. Malin Head was the first place and it was used as a seaside location, while Culdaff was transformed into a 1920s style in preparation for production.

At the time of filming, the Donegal Film Office asked if anyone in the locality owned a mailboat, cart, donkey or horse to contact them.
