Pat the Cope Gallagher performed the official opening of the refurbished boutique hotel, which was originally owned by John D Sweeney in 1850.
On the opening evening, there was a piper accompanied by live music and Irish dancers. There was even an impromptu performance from Daniel O’Donnell, who recalled performing the same song - My Donegal Shore - from his first record 41 years ago in the same venue.
Now owned by Pat Boyle and managed by Martina Rafferty, Sweeney’s Hotel is back in business. While some work is still being carried out, the restaurant is open with a special Mary From Dungloe menu as of last Friday. There will also be a pizzeria and bakery for casual dining, an afternoon tearoom, and 16 bedrooms opening soon.
The five rooms in the original part of the hotel were named after people associated with the area - Daniel O’Donnell, Margo, Moya Brennan, Packie Bonner and the late Gay Byrne with the blessing of his family.
The original establishment housed 30 bedrooms, a small bar, a grocery outlet, a drapery and also a post office. The property will still feature some refurbished elements of the original hotel but there are new elements added, and of course, the boutique style.
Pat and his Chicago counterpart Kevin Boyle began the refurbishment process four years ago and were featured on RTE’s At Your Service with John and Francis Brennan in July 2022.
The hotel was officially opened on July 25, 2024, just in time for the 57th Mary From Dungloe International Arts Festival.
