Gallery: Glenties welcomes home European silver medallist Fintan Dewhirst

Sixteen-year-old Fintan Dewhirst returned to Glenties a hero on Friday evening following his capturing of silver at the to claim a silver medal in the European Under-18 Athletic Championships in Jerusalem

Glenties rolled out a homecoming as only Glenties can do as Fintan Dewhirst received a hero's welcome on Friday evening following his capturing of silver at the European Under-18 Athletic Championships in Jerusalem.

The Tír Chonaill AC member and student at St Columba’s Comprehensive School Glenties shaved almost a second off his PB to claim second place in the top-class field at the Hebrew University Stadium in the 400m Hurdles final.

On Thursday, 16-year-old Dewhirst, who is coached by Brian McGonagle, ran 61.65 seconds to come home in second place behind race winner, Norway's Elnan Aurstad, who ran 50.89. Hungarian Gergő Takács was third with 51.77.
