Introducing the Donegal Sports Star Awards 1980 winners 40 years on one-by-one

The Donegal Sports Star Committee caught up on the 40-year anniversary presentations on Monday night in Letterkenny, having sat out two years during the pandemic, and re-introduced the 1980 and 1981 winners - these are the stories of the 1980 winners

Denis Bonner (Soccer)
The three nominees in 1980 were Denis Bonner of Keadue Rovers and two Fanad United men in John Kerr and Eddie McGinley. Denis, a twin brother of Irish International goalkeeper Packie Bonner, forged a very impressive career of his own in the League of Ireland. Beforehand, at Keadue Rovers, he was captain of the team that won the IAWS Cup in 1980 and they were also runners-up in a very competitive Donegal Junior League.
A student at the Letterkenny IT at the time Denis Bonner played for the Irish Technical Colleges team against Holland and England that year. He had a two-year spell with Finn Harps and hen he started University in Galway, in 1982, was signed by Galway United and he went on to have seven seasons with the Tribesmen. Denis finished his top flight career in 1993 after three years with Sligo Rovers.
