Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine cut the ribbon, describing Donegal Town as ‘the jewel in our county’s crown.’
“It gives me great pleasure to officially launch and open here today this wonderful new development,” he said. “And may everyone enjoy it for many, many years into the future.”
It is hoped that the Diamond will be an important focal point for everyone, from major celebrations to taking time out for a chat or a quiet reflection.

MC for the launch on Friday afternoon was Donegal Town native and Donegal County Council’s Director of Services, Garry Martin.
“This is about celebrating where we are today,” he told those gathered as he welcomed dignitaries, those involved in the project, and members of the community.
Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Niamh Kennedy (Ind) agreed, praising Donegal Town’s community groups for their invaluable input.
“Your passion and commitment shaped this space to one that reflects our values and aspirations,” she said.
“As we look around we see more than just benches and paving stones. We see opportunities for connection and engagement, elements that honour our local heritage and culture.
“I encourage each of you to take ownership of this space. It is a space for us all, whether you are enjoying a sunny afternoon participating in local events or simply taking a moment to enjoy the scenery. Let this be a place where memories are made and friendships are forged.”
Cathaoirleach of Donegal MD, Cllr Noel Jordan (SF) said the Diamond had been transformed in a really positive way.
“The new canopy, seating, planting and paving greatly enhance the look and feel of this space,” he said.
“Donegal Town Diamond is now an outdoor space that is truly innovative, and facilitates year-round use, helping businesses to navigate the shoulder season’s months.”
Director of Community Development and Planning Services in Donegal County Council, Liam Ward spoke of the value of public spaces.
“Within the council we recognise the vital role that public spaces play in improving the fabric of our towns and villages, bringing communities together and encouraging people to visit,” he said.
“Investing in these spaces is important to the council and we want to collaborate to create an environment where people come together to share experience and to forge connections.
“I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone involved, from early planning stages to the execution and completion of the project, for your dedication and hard work.”
Mary McGettigan of Donegal Town Community Chamber thanked Donegal County Council for its support in a number of recent projects which have enhanced the town. These include the new one-way system and the wider pavements designed to make life safer for people with disabilities or limited mobility and for young families. She also mentioned the major refurbishment of the playground which was recently completed, as well as the restoration of Dr Warnock’s monument and grave in the Old Abbey graveyard.
Mrs McGettigan welcomed the work on the Diamond and the opportunities it provided for the community.
One notable feature is the large canopy which can facilitate events all year round.
“For many years people wanted a bandstand here but I think I’m glad we held out and we have this canopy,” she said.
Garry Martin was among those to praise Mary, her husband Ernan and the Community Chamber team for their dedication and commitment to the betterment of Donegal Town.
“It makes the pathway a lot easier to be able to deliver good projects on the ground when you have a strong community group,” he said.
“They have provided a long, long service to this town and I would like to acknowledge that.”
There was also a special word of thanks for Paul Doherty Architects, Axis Construction, Joy Browne of Donegal County Council for overseeing the project, and everyone involved in any way.
The project was jointly-funded by Donegal County County and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media’s Outdoor Spaces Fund.
Following the cutting of the ribbon, guests were treated to hot drinks and baked goods at Le Petit Marché craft bakery.
