In pictures: The Meenderry Band signs off in style in Falcarragh

In 2010 the Meenderry Band reformed to mark the 100th anniversary of Meenderry School and they enjoyed it so much, they kept going until Easter Sunday when they marched Falcarragh for the final time

Originally formed in the early 1960s by teacher Eddie Doohan at Meenderry School, the band was made up primarily of pupils and even brought home silverware after a successful performance at a competition in Dungloe.

When Eddie left the school in the mid-60s, the band paused for a time but was later revived by his successor, Seamus McHugh, who resumed practices during school hours, from Cassie’s Corner to the school.

Decades later, in August 2010, the band was reformed to mark the 100th anniversary of Meenderry School. It meant the band continued to represent the Meenderry community ever since, performing at countless local events and celebrations before they called it a day.

“Well, that's it, the end of an era for the Golden Oldies, and what an adventure it has been,” they posted. “Nothing could have prepared us for that last farewell. It was an emotional evening from start to finish, which was meticulously organised by committee/band members from Banna Ceoil CloichCheann Fhaola and Buíon Cheoil Sinsear Chloich Cheann Fhaola, who took time out of their busy schedule to give us an amazing send off.

“To say we were delighted with the unbelievable turnout at Falcarragh crossroads would be an understatement. We would like to thank each and every one of you for coming out and making it a memorable occasion. Led by both bands, our final stop was to Ionad Naomh Fionnán Falcarragh.”
