Visit Salthill House Garden, Mountcharles

Step away from the hustle and bustle with a visit to the stunning Salthill House Garden.
Over the last 30 years, the owner has recreated Salthill's walled garden, which is sheltered by the house and yards, slowly and patiently. She has complimented the original gravel paths with hedges and grass paths to provide additional structure, and concentrated on plants that thrive in this northerly environment.
The result is an authentic country house walled garden, skillfully planted with a combination of perennials and shrubs, interspersed with vegetables, herbs and fruit trees.
Outside the walls is a new area of woodland to the East, where the maturing trees are interspersed with mown paths. The gravel avenue, curved sweep and yards are skillfully raked into swirling curvilinear patterns that recall the abstract la Tène ornamentation that influenced Irish early Christian art.
The garden is open throughout Heritage Week, August 17 to 25, from 2pm to 6pm.
An admission fee of €6 applies for adults, OAPs and students. Children €2, under threes go free.
