Watch: 'I'm going to work hard for the next five years' - Donal 'Mandy' Kelly

Kelly spoke ahead of the first official count results at Aura Leisure Centre today (Sunday June 9)

Donal 'Mandy' Kelly has vowed to work hard for the next five years as he waits for the announcement confirming his re-election to Donegal County Council.

He topped the polls in yesterday evening's (June 8) tallies at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny, with 1,791 votes and 14% of the vote.

Speaking to Donegal Live reporter Mary McFadden, he said, "I'm sitting very comfortable, it's all systems go. I'm delighted to be surrounded by a good number of the team and there's more still to come in.

"I didn't expect to be topping the poll, it's overwhelming, and it's a very proud day."

He praised his "brilliant team" and thanked people who came out to vote for him.

He said, "People got behind me. I've worked hard for the last three and a half years, there's no shying away from that, and people came out and I want to thank each and every individual who came out and got behind me and gave me the vote where it was the first, second, third, fourth or not, it all counts.

"I'm delighted to be back in now to represent the people for another five years. As I say I worked hard for the last three and a half and I'll do that again for the next five. I'll continue to share with people the best of my ability."

Kelly took over the role of councillor from his father, Donal Snr, in 2020 following his resignation.

His brother Manus Kelly originally won the seat in the May 2019 elections just weeks before his tragic death in the Donegal International Rally.
