Watch: Three, two, one ... Donegal Town is officially switched-on for Christmas

Santa Claus was on hand at the Diamond in Donegal Town to perform the official turning on of the Christmas lights with the huge crowd in attendance singing along to 'Fairytale of New York' in memory of Shane MacGowan

Hundreds gathered in the Diamond in Donegal Town for the official switch-on of the Christmas lights this evening.

Community Worker and Master Butcher Ernan McGettigan performed the MC duties as he welcomed Santa Claus, who arrived in a vintage car, with James Gillespie Parish Priest of Tawnawilly, Donegal Town, blessing the Christmas tree.

Local councillors Tom Conaghan, Noel Jordan, Michael Naughton and Michael McMahon were in attendance together with Donegal Town Mayor Pauric Kennedy, Rector Ven David Huss and Rev John Montgomery.

Magee of Donegal won the best large window display and Eske Pharmacy won the best small window display. The crowd in attendance joined in for a 'Fairytale of New York' in memory of Shane MacGowan, who sadly passed away this morning.
