Watch out Chelsea Flower Show and Bloom competitors as Donegal Foroige young people can provide stiff competition.
This was witnessed by the 300,000 people who viewed the garden they designed, built and showcased at the National Ploughing Championship in Tullamore.
The garden project was the culmination of work done all summer, artistically directed by Olive Travers and Jenny Cooper and supported by Maura Gallagher, Foroige alongside Foroige volunteers and young people from Foroige Youth Projects in Ballyshannon, Donegal Town & Killybegs.
The garden design based on Allingham's poem The Fairies was one of two chosen nationally for sponsorship by Aldi who also provided the group with a professional garden design mentor from SAP Landscaping.
Forty five young Donegal Foroige members together with staff and volunteers installed their garden at the ALDI tent and manned it over the three days of the Ploughing Championships. It looked fantastic and was a credit to the creativity of the young people involved and promoted a very positive image of Donegal to the hundreds of thousands of people who came to admire it.
The good news is that Aldi gifted the beautiful trees and plants used in the garden to Foroige who, with the help of the Allingham Arts Festival have brought them back to Ballyshannon. It is hoped now that with the help of sponsorship from BMG the young people will install their garden in its natural home of Ballyshannon, where it can be enjoyed by all.
Foroige are also hoping to install some mini fairy gardens in the windows of some empty commercial premises to bring a smile to the face of the town and provide a fitting backdrop to the Allingham Arts Festival in November.
Well done to all, a magnificent project.
