Swim Team make a big splash at Ulster Swim Championship
Congratulations to the Coláiste Cholmcille swim team on a very successful day at the Ulster Swim Championship in Bangor at the weekend. The Senior Team won the Melanie Nocher Cup after as they gained the highest number of points over a number of races. Mona Mc Sharry won gold in both the 100m breaststroke and the 100m freestyle. Roisín Maguire came third in the 100m Fly and the 100m freestyle. Mouric Mc Sharry came first in the 100m breaststroke and third in the 100m free. Ruby Hurst came 4th in the final breaststroke. The remainder of the team performed very well in all their competitions.
Connect Mental Health Week
Students took part in a programme of mental health awareness activities workshops last week organised by Connect Mental Health, such as the 'Real Talks' workshops to facilitate open conversations about mental health, and the Shona Project workshop on bullying. Donal Walsh's mother Elma visited the school to deliver the inspirational story of Donal's life. TY students also attended a Be Healthy, Be Happy workshop in the Abbey hotel, and on Friday they set up stall in the Assembly Area selling healthy snacks such as tubs of fruit and vegetables with hummus on the side, to promote healthy eating in the school community.
Walk in My Shoes
Coláiste Cholmcille took part in a 'Walk in my Shoes' day on Friday. Staff and students were allowed to kick off their usual uniform school shoes and wear whatever footwear took their fancy to school. There were some interesting choices treading around, from the latest high street fashion, to the best of bedroom footwear, to ski-boots and diving boots! All proceeds go to the Walk in my Shoes organisation in providing mental health services to young people.
Senior Girls Gaelic
Our Senior Girls' Gaelic team got their season off to a winning start with a comprehensive win over Colaiste Ailigh in Letterkenny last Monday. The girls were slow to start but soon took control of the game with some superb defending and score taking. Overall it was a great team performance. They will be hoping to continue their good form in their next match against Magh Ene at home.
In addition to Connect Mental Health, TYs took part in a programme of health and safety activities last week. On Monday all TYs attended a presentation on Fire Safety with Conal Kane and Ciaran Drummond from the local fire station. On Tuesday the whole year group attended the RSA Road Safety Road Show in Letterkenny for a very emotional yet beneficial presentation. AIB visited the school this week to inform students about the Build a Bank competition. 6 students will compete to get on the school team.
Outstanding Success at Young Engineering Awards
Congratulations to four of our Engineering students and the Engineering Dept. in their success at the Young Engineering Regional Awards in Letterkenny last week. Cían Duffy and Martin Mc Manus won first and second place at Higher Level respectively. In Ordinary Level, Shane Begley won first and Dáire Doyle won second. All four students will go on to represent the region in the National Finals later this month.
University of Limerick Open Day
A group of Leaving Cert students and Fifth Years will travel to the University of Limerick Open Day on Friday. The trip is organised by the Careers Department. Students will have an opportunity to visit the campus and participate in taster sessions in various subjects.
The Under 16 Boys Gaelic team beat Killybegs in a home game this week. However, the U16 Boys Gaelic team were beaten by 7 points by AVS. In basketball, the Under 16 Boys were defeated by St. Mary's, Drogheda, in a home game, 28-35. The Under 16 Girls Basketball team were narrowly defeated in their cup match against Kiltimagh recently. Both Under 16 and Under 19 Girls Basketball played against the Ursuline recently, but were defeated.
