Simon Harris to receive Donegal MD letter regarding fishing quota cuts
Donegal Municipal District will write a letter to both the Tanaiste and the Minister of State with special responsibility for Fisheries in light of the recent news that fishing quotas of mackerel are set to be reduced by 70% in 2026.
Pauric Sheerin, the Area Manager in Donegal Municipal District in Housing and Corporate Services, confirmed at the October meeting of Donegal Municipal District Meeting at Donegal Town, that the District would write a letter following a proposal from Cllr Michael Boyle.
Mackerel is Ireland’s most valuable catch and is worth €94 million in exports. Such a reduction could see that figure slashed by as much as €66 million, which Cllr Niamh Kennedy had previously said would be a “devastating blow to Donegal.”

Cllr Boyle said: “I have been in contact with Simon Harris. What I am asking here is for cross-party support, that we write to the Minister against these proposed cuts.
“If this happens to Killybegs, we may as well turn off the lights. This is going to be detrimental. We need to stand united on this.
“The factory workers are left out on this alone.
“I would like that we can send letters or emails to the right people on behalf of the Municipal District.”
