Cllr Micheál Naughton said a meeting with the relevant Government Minister should be requested at Donegal MD meeting

A Donegal County Councillor has called for a Government meeting to get extra funding to make the Pettigo Road safer.

Speaking at September’s Donegal Municipal District Meeting, Fianna Fáil’s Micheál Naughton highlighted the early August crash on the R232 at Fincashel, where a collision saw a man lose his life and his partner seriously injured and hospitalised.

Cllr Naughton said: “Since the last meeting, another life has been lost. I appreciate that we have men on the schemes, but I want us to go a step further. I want to request a meeting with the Minister and put in a request for emergency funding to look into these events.

“I met with the Minister and the Department about two years ago. I am well aware that at the end of the year, there is funding available.

“We will go where we have to go. This is a matter of urgency that we get funding. We can not afford another life lost.

“In fairness to the Department and Government, anytime we went, we got spoken to and got help.”

In response, the Area Manager for Roads and Transportation told Cllr Naughton that there was an application for a safety scheme that could be tried to progress forward.

He said: “That is something I can try to progress; I will drop an email.”
