Boxer Jason Quigley and singer-songwriter John Doherty
Killybegs singer-songwriter John Doherty has teamed up with professional boxer Jason Quigley for a stunning new hit that shows Donegal at its finest.
John returned home to Donegal during the Covid-19 pandemic after a lengthy spell living in Dublin.
The former Little Hours frontman was inspired by Donegal’s resilience and spirit during the darkest days of the pandemic.
He penned ‘Fighters’, which is part of his new four-track EP ‘Resilience’, which is out this Friday.
“Whenever I was back here, I saw how the community came together,” John told Donegal Live about ‘Fighters’.
“That happened all over Ireland, where people came together, but I feel that we in Donegal really took each day at a time and showed how resilient we are. We got through it together.
“When I got back here, there was a lot of tragedy and it was a bad time for a lot of people with a lot of uncertainty. I think we just had the right attitude to it and that sparked the song.”
John was in Ballybofey last year doing some Christmas shopping when he bumped into world middleweight title challenger Quigley.
The two spoke briefly and met a couple of months later when the idea was hatched.
“He sent the song to me and when I listened to the song I was like: ‘Wow’,” Jason told Donegal Live. “We sat down and he filled me in about the story on the song and the idea for the video. I think the song is unreal.”
With the help of editor Charlie Joe Doherty, assistant camera operator Emmet Toner and drone operator Declan Devlin, the end product is superb song and scenery, capturing the best of Donegal.
The singer said: “I wanted to write something good about how we fought through it. I wanted a video to reflect the resilience of the people and the powerful place that is Donegal.”
Quigley brings professional boxing back to Donegal this weekend with the Rumble In The Hills card set to get the sparks flying at the Aura Leisure Complex in Letterkenny on Saturday night.
The Ballybofey man said: “I was so delighted to be a part of it and to be honest I couldn’t have imagined that it would come out as well as it did. I’m so grateful to have been a part of something that shows the resilience of Donegal. The song and the video are just Donegal all over.”
John smiles as he’s asked for his verdict on the end product: “I think we nailed it.”
