Killybegs talent Ultan Pringle’s hit play BOYFRIENDS returning to Letterkenny

BOYFRIENDS stars Ultan Pringle and Emmanuel Okoye

Killybegs playwright Ultan Pringle is bringing his hit play BOYFRIENDS back to Letterkenny this October.

Hailed as “one of the best, if not the best, new plays of 2024” by The Arts Review, the LemonSoap Productions play is going on an eight-stop nationwide tour. It will open at An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny on Friday, October 10, for three shows only that weekend, touring to seven other venues nationally until November 15.

BOYFRIENDS is written by Donegal writer and actor Pringle with the addition of the directorial dexterous hands of Joy Nesbitt. The play is a two hander with Emmanuel Okoye [Disenchanted (2022), The Dry (RTE, 2022)] and Ultan Pringle [Falling For The Life of Alex Whelan (2023)], who play two star-crossed lovers who take a big look at their very new relationship and what a modern day romance should become.

“Boyfriends lands with audiences for it’s a play about connection, and companionship, and I think we’re at a time in our world where we’re all a little bit searching for togetherness,” said Ultan Pringle. “We root hard for these two fellas who are bumbling and insecure and trying very hard to work out how they could love one another. And there’s a remote controlled pug dog made of old socks – so, what’s not to love?

“I’m buzzing to bring a romantic comedy like it around Ireland, to go back to my home of Donegal, and to Dublin, Kildare, Galway, Limerick, and Longford. And I’ve never been to Roscommon or Clare so I’m looking forward to road tripping it! Is the Burren close to Ennis? I’ll find out.”

As a writer, Ultan has worked with An Grianan Theatre, The Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey, The New Theatre, Dublin. With LemonSoap Productions he has written Marmalade Row, It Is Good We Are Dreaming, Piglet, Fruit and Pistachio starring three time Oscar nominee Piper Laurie. He was a 2021 Activate Residency recipient in The Backstage Theatre, Longford, developing a new queer musical about seven LGBTQIA+ struggling twenty somethings in Dublin today. He was longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize in the UK for his play Lavender Hill and he wrote for the 2024 24Hour Plays with the Abbey Theatre. His previous acting credits include Falling For The Life Of Alex Whelan on RTE Two and a lot of Dad roles while in college. He is deeply intrigued by and invested in stories which investigate human relationships and the extraordinary in the everyday.
