Conor Kelly of Finn Valley AC set a new best on Friday evening

Conor Kelly lowered the National U20 400m record - and the Finn Valley AC ace is targeting European gold in the coming weeks.

Kelly clocked 45.85 seconds at the Morton Games on Friday evening.

Kelly finished fourth in a time that lowers his 46.09 National U20 record. His new personal best is also a Donegal record in the 400m and a Finn Valley AC club record.

“It was great - I wanted to run a 45 when I was 17,” said Kelly, who turns 18 next week.

Kelly, a recent Finn Valley AC recruit, will compete in the European Athletics U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland next month.

He said: “I’m going for that gold. I won’t be happy with anything bar that gold.”

Kelly also outlined that he is looking for a jump into 44-second territory, adding: “I have to make that push.”
