European gold medallist Roisin Hegarty has been shortlisted for the young sportswoman of the year award at the Local Women Sport awards.

The Twin Towns Boxing Club ace, who won European U15 gold last year, will become a five-time Irish champion this weekend in Dublin.

She has been shortlisted by Local Women Sport, a dedicated women’s sport website, for the young sportswoman of the year after her exploits in 2025.

Hegarty, a student at Loreto Secondary School in Letterkenny, defeated Ukrainian opponent Tetiana Zvenihorodska and became the first Donegal female to win a European gold in the process, taking the 63kgs crown in Montenegro.

After returning from her heroics, Hegarty won silver at the Athy Box Cup, pipped by Sinead O’Doherty in the Girl 2 63kgs final, having beaten Ashling Greene from Dealgan BC at the Twin Towns BC tournament in Ballybofey.

Hegarty was a co-captain of the Irish squad for the trip to Montenegro and won a convincing gold medal.

She also recorded wins over Mia Aleksa and Ivana Kilci at the Europeans.

“Everyone at the Twin Towns Boxing Club is very proud of Roisin receiving the honour of being shortlisted as a finalist at these awards,” Twin Towns Boxing Club said.

“The winners will be announced at a black tie gala dinner at the Europa Hotel in Belfast on April 11th. We all wish Roisin the best of luck in the awards but win or not we are all very proud of her.”

Hegarty will bring home the Girl 4 66kgs title from Dublin this weekend, the Letterkenny teenager to take the title by way of a walkover.
