Five arrests over Letterkenny car thefts

Five people have been arrested in connection with a spate of car thefts in the Letterkenny area.

Gardai in Letterkenny have confirmed that five arrests were made over the last week.

Some of those arrested are before the courts.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Investigations are ongoing and we would like to thank anybody who may have assisted with any of the appeals we made for information.”

The Letterkenny District, in particular, has seen an increase in vehicles being stolen.

Officers locally have said that vehicles, particularly Japanese imports, had been targeted on a weekly basis.

Just last week, a spokesperson warned: “Many second-hand car imports do not have a fully fitted car alarm system or are without a fitted immobiliser. This makes them vulnerable to hot-wiring.

“For cars without an immobiliser, an additional steering wheel lock or chain should be considered.

“If the model has a keyless ignition it has been proven possible to pick up a signal from the key fob from within the house where it is parked.”

Last month, a white Toyota Corolla estate was found burned out on the outskirts of Letterkenny after being stolen from a business premises on Pearse Road.

Another vehicle, a white Nissan Micra, was found on fire in the College Farm Road area after being stolen from McMahon Villas.
