An Annagry man who was caught driving at 171km/h has avoided a driving ban.

James Sharkey was detected driving 71km/h over the 100km/h speed limit at Coolboy Big, travelling in the direction of Kilmacrennan, on April 3, 2023.

Gardai stopped Sharkey, a 36-year-old with an address at Bayview House, Annagry, and charged him with dangerous driving.

Sharkey’s solicitor said his client was driving on a straight stretch of road, which was dry at the time. Sharkey was on his way back from working in the UK, where he works long hours, the solicitor told Letterkenny District Court.

“This was a stupid mistake and a rush of blood to the head,” he said, adding that a driving licence was necessary for Sharkey’s employment. “The loss of his licence would mean the loss of his job.”

Judge Ciaran Liddy accepted a plea to a charge of careless driving. Sharkey was fined €150 and given three months to pay.
