€200 fine for fifth unpaid parking charge: ‘He is racking them up,’ says judge

A man who failed to attend court after not paying a parking fine has been fined €200 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of €138.

Oisin Gallagher, Eglish, Donegal Town was due before Donegal District Court on Wednesday but did not attend. 

The court heard evidence that a motor vehicle in his name was parked at No 2 car park, Donegal Town without displaying a valid parking ticket on August 19, 2023. 

Solicitor for Donegal County Council Kevin McElhiney told the court that the defendant had four previous convictions. The offences were detected during March, April and May 2023 and the convictions recorded on NOvember 27, 2023.

Judge Deirdre Gearty said: “He is racking them up.”

Having imposed a fine and an order for costs, Judge Gearty set recognisance at €100 and €100 bond in the event of an appeal being lodged.
