Kinahan cartel target James ‘Mago’ Gately was arrested in Donegal last week.

The 35-year-old Dubliner was arrested in the Ballybofey area on suspicion of drug-driving.

Gately, who is aligned to the Hutch gang, is said to be the number one target of the Kinahan gang.

Gately was arrested after allegedly failing a roadside drugs test.

He was subsequently released without charge pending further analysis.

It is understood that Gately was travelling to Northern Ireland at the time of his arrest on May 7.

The vehicle being driven by Gately was stopped at a checkpoint as part of An Garda Siochana’s May Bank Holiday weekend operation.

Gately has previously been described win court as being a ‘senior figure’ in the Hutch gang.

He is also embroiled in a battle with the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) over a property in Dublin with CAB arguing that the house has been refurbished through the proceeds of crime.
