The late Judge Elizabeth MacGrath (left) and Judge Sandra Murphy
A minute's silence was held at Ballyshannon District Court on Friday in memory of the late Judge Elizabeth MacGrath.
Judge Sandra Murphy paid tribute to the late Judge MacGrath, who passed away at the age of 65 following a short illness in her native Nenagh, County Tipperary.
She was the President of the Association of District Court Judges and was the elected representative of the District Court to the board of the Judicial Council.
“Particularly as a human being, she gave her vast knowledge and skill to work as a District Court judge and worked as an advocate of District Court judges,” Judge Murphy said.
“She will be sadly missed by her family and by the many, many colleagues and friends who loved and admired her.”
A former solicitor of 24 years, she was appointed to the bench in 2007. Judge MacGrath had been presiding in District Number 8, in County Tipperary, since 2012.
Her husband, Charles Stanley-Smith, is a former Chair of An Taisce and her brother, Michael MacGrath, is a Judge at the Court of Appeal.
