An Garda Siochana has encouraged the general public to report incidents of underage driving which may concern them.

Garda Gráinne Doherty was speaking in response to a query from a member of the public, who claims to have seen a young boy on a quad bike in Raphoe.

“I witnessed a young boy on a quad bike purposely sliding and skidding on an icy road in Raphoe,” read the query. “I know for sure this boy is only 11 or 12 years of age, he was on the main road in the town parks area, leading to Mongorry.

“I was quite shocked at how dangerous this was, not just for him but for any motorists who were on that road, it was difficult enough to control a vehicle as it was 9pm and the road was slippy. Also, I can’t believe the irresponsibility of the parents who felt that this was ok, as they were on the footpath egging him on. Confused as to what to do, should the Gardaí be involved?

“Ideally, Gardaí should have been contacted immediately by the person who witnessed this incident,” Garda Doherty responded. “I would encourage the person who sent this question in to make contact with Gardaí to report the matter so that it may be investigated.

“Quads are powerful machines that have the potential to severely or even fatally injure someone. If used on a public road, they are subject to the same rules that apply to other mechanically propelled vehicles. They must be registered, taxed, and roadworthy and they must comply with standard road regulations. The driver must hold the relevant driving licence and be fully insured to drive the vehicle.”
