'Episodic' Penneys thief fined in court

Penneys in Letterkenny Shopping Centre

A man who stole three duvets and two pillows from Penneys in Letterkenny has been given the benefit of the Probation Act.

Dubliner Mark Byrne was charged with stealing the goods at Penneys at Letterkenny Shopping Centre on March 27, 2025.

Byrne, of Ellensborough Court, Kiltipper Road in Tallaght, told Letterkenny District Court he had never done anything like this before.

The court was told the accused man had no previous convictions.

The pillows and duvets, which were recovered, were valued at €75.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Frank Dorrian, described Byrne's actions as "an irrational act" and that he had been on medication at the time of the theft.

He said he was up in Donegal staying with friends and had no use for the items he had stolen.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham applied the Probation Act and told Byrne he would only get one chance.
