The man appeared before Letterkenny Circuit Court

A man in his 60s charged with a range of sexual assault charges in Donegal between 1993 and 2005 has pleaded guilty.

The man, who cannot be named at this stage, appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court.

He was extradited from Northern Ireland in March and has been in custody since he was initially brought before Letterkenny District Court.

The accused man pleaded guilty to three sample charges when he was formally arraigned before Judge John Aylmer.

There are three female victims in the case and the offences relate to various locations in Donegal.

The man spoke only to plead guilty to the three charges.

State prosecutor Ms Fiona Crawford said the early plea was without prejudice.

Mr Peter Nolan BL, barrister for the accused, said his client is an elderly gentleman and he asked that a probation report be prepared. Mr Nolan also sought the preparation of medical and psychiatric reports.

Judge Aylmer agreed and asked that a probation report include an assessment of suitability for community service.

The matter was adjourned to July.

The defendant cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the victims in the case.
