Drunk man who cursed at gardaí in Letterkenny ordered to make donation

A drunk man who was stumbling on the street before telling Gardai to 'f*** off' has been given a chance to avoid a criminal conviction.

Lee Maguire appeared before Letterkenny District Court, charged with Public Order offences.

The court was told that Gardai came across the 35-year-old at Lower Main Street in Letterkenny on August 23 last.

Sergeant Jim Collins said Maguire, of Ashbrook, Letterkenny, was stumbling and became aggressive towards Gardai when approached and stuck up his fingers at them.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Gordon Curley, said his client was a steel worker, was very apologetic and that this was completely out of character for him.

He asked the court if it might take a "certain view' on the matter.

Judge Vincent Deane said that if Maguire paid €300 to Saint Vincent de Paul, he would strike the matter out.

If he failed to pay this donation, it would be increased to a €600 fine.

The case was adjourned to September 8th to allow the donation to be made.
