Donegal gardaí have issued a warning after reports of bogus callers in parts of the county in recent days.

The bogus callers, who were encountered in the Inishowen and Letterkenny areas this week, were travelling in vans and campervans.

Gardaí have warned that the callers could show up in any part of Donegal and in various types of vehicles.

The callers may offer services such as powerwashing, painting, tarmacking, etc. They may also be offering goods for sale such as tools, generators, etc.

Gardaí say they prefer to target the more vulnerable and people who live alone.

Gardaí are advising people not to engage with such callers and not to open doors to anyone before being confident that they know them or that they have a genuine reason to be there. They are also advising the use of a chain lock for added security.

“These callers can be intimidating and often refuse to take no for an answer,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“Contact gardaí immediately should you encounter such a caller and try to give as much information as possible, description of person, registration number, direction of travel etc.

“Pass this advice on to those who may need a reminder such as elderly or vulnerable family members, neighbours or friends. Remember if in doubt keep them out!”
