Donegal man to stand trial on 46 sex-related charges

The man appeared before Letterkenny District Court

A Donegal man faces a Circuit Court trial on 46 sex-related charges.

The man appeared by videolink at Letterkenny District Court charged with the offences which include rape, sexual assault and the sexual exploitation of a child.

He is charged with 10 counts of rape, contrary to section 48 of the Offences Against the Person Act, 1861 and section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act, 1981 as amended by section 21 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990.

He also faces 10 counts of rape contrary to section 4 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990

He is also charged with 12 counts of sexual assault and 12 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.

All the offences are alleged to have happened at various locations between December 11, 2019 and December 31, 2022.

The man, who is in his 30s, cannot be named at present.

Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that he served a book of evidence on the accused man's solicitor, Ms Catherine Bonner.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented for the man to be sent forward to the current sitting of the Central Criminal Court for trial.

Ms Bonner requested both a senior and junior counsel for the trial.

Judge Emile Daly gave the accused man the alibi warning and no application was made for bail.
