An Garda Síochána has highlighted serious speeding detections in Fahan and Bundoran as part of an enhanced road safety and traffic enforcement operation carried out over the St Brigid’s Bank Holiday weekend.
The nationwide operation ran from 7am on Thursday, January 29, to 7am on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, and coincided with a weekend in which two people lost their lives in separate fatal road traffic collisions. A further 14 serious injury collisions, resulting in 15 serious injuries, were also recorded across the State.

Among the most concerning speeding offences detected during the operation were two incidents in Donegal. Gardaí recorded a vehicle travelling at 130km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R239 in Fahan, while another motorist was detected driving at 95km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R267 in Bundoran. Both roads are regularly used by local traffic as well as visitors, particularly during holiday periods.
Across the country, An Garda Síochána and GoSafe mobile and fixed speed cameras detected almost 3,500 motorists speeding between Friday, January 30, and Monday, February 2. The highest number of detections occurred on Bank Holiday Monday, when more than 800 drivers were caught exceeding the speed limit.
During the same period, 193 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, while nearly 400 motorists were detected using a mobile phone while driving. Gardaí also detained over 660 vehicles, with half of those seized due to a lack of insurance.
Figures released by Gardaí show that 13 people have died on Irish roads so far in 2026, as of February 3. In total, 188 people lost their lives on Irish roads in 2025, including 14 deaths in January alone.
In light of the Bank Holiday figures and the serious speeding detections in areas such as Fahan and Bundoran, An Garda Síochána has renewed its appeal to all road users to slow down, avoid distractions, never drive under the influence, and always wear a seatbelt, warning that enforcement operations will continue nationwide.
