Buncrana Roads Policing Unit clocked a driver on St Valentine's Day doing almost double the speed limit.

They were conducting a speed check on Saturday, when they detected a vehicle travelling at 149kph in an 8Okph speed zone.

"The driver informed Gardaí that his friend, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was late for his date and that was the reason for the speed," An Garda Siochana posted. "The driver was arrested and now has a court date. Better to be late than not show up at all! slow down."
