Donegal court hands out over €7,000 in fines for speeding at N13 camera

Donegal court hands out over €7,000 in fines for speeding at N13 camera

Fines were issues at Letterkenny District Court after people were caught speeding by a static speed camera at Killyverry, Newtowncunningham

Fines totalling over €7,000 were issued in court to people charged with speeding in front of Donegal’s first static speed camera.

A raft of cases were before Letterkenny District Court in relation to the camera, which is on the N13 at Killyverry, Newtowncunningham.

The camera was installed in December 2024 and the speed limit on the road is 100km/h or 80km/h for HGVs.

The cases before Judge Emile Daly were for unpaid fixed charge penalty notices which were issued to drivers.

The matters were outlined to the court by Garda Sergeant Jim Collins.

Among the drivers was Roger Maxwell, who was twice caught over the speed limit in a HGV, Sergeant Collins told the court.

He outlined how the speed limit for such vehicles is 80km/h and that Maxwell was caught at 91km/h on January 20, 2025 at 5.24am and at 89km/h on January 28, 2025 at 8.34am.

Judge Daly convicted Maxwell, of Dooish, Ballybofey, and fined him a total of €720.

Amanda Greene, of Gort na Mona, Dungloe, was also fined €680 after being detected at 109km/h on June 20, 2025 and at 112km/h on August 18, 2025.

Charles McDaid of St Boden’s, Culdaff, was present in court and said he contacted An Garda Siochana after receiving the summons, but was told it was too late to pay. He said he did not receive any fines in the post.

McDaid faced charges in respect of July 14, 2025 and July 19, 2025 told the court that these represented him going to and returning from his work.

The first matter was struck out and McDaid was fined €320 for driving at 111km/h at 6.25am on July 19.

Seamus McElhinney, of Churchfield, Drumaweir, Greencastle, was clocked at 130km/h on May 16, 2025.

McElhinney was convicted fined €420 by Judge Daly.

The camera recorded Deane Vance from Ballinacarrick, Ballintra travelling at 125km/h at 5.01am on July 3, 2025. 

Vance was convicted and fined €400.

Christian Preda was driving at 119km/h on January 10, 2025 and received a €350 fine, as did Joseph William King who was clocked at 118km/h on June 19, 2025.

A €360 fine was imposed on Steven Coyle, of Golan, Milford, who was caught at 118km/h on January 1, 2025.

Michael Gibbons, of Coteen, Derrybeg, was fined €340 after being detected at 114km/h on August 16, 2025 at 4.06am while Naomi O’Dowd of Oatfield Terrace, Letterkenny was hit with a €320 fine after being caught driving at 112km/h on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024.

The speed camera between Newtowncunningham and Manorcunningham went live in late 2024 as part of a national rollout .

Over 30 such cases were listed before this sitting of the court and fines totalling over €7,000 were handed out by Judge Daly.
