Gardai issue warning to parents after quad and moped seized at Culdaff pier

“The last thing we want is to have to call to anybody’s home with bad news”
Donegal gardaí have issued a stark warning to parents and young people about the dangers of illegally using quad bikes and mopeds after seizing vehicles from youths in Inishowen in recent days.
Both a moped and a quad were seized at Bunagee Pier, Culdaff on the night of Wednesday, July 8, prompting Gardaí to renew their appeal for parents and guardians to discuss both the legal requirements and the potentially devastating consequences of using such vehicles irresponsibly.
Gardaí warned that quad bikes and petrol-powered mopeds have the potential to cause serious, life-changing injuries or even fatalities if not used safely and legally.
Petrol-powered mopeds are legally classified as mechanically propelled vehicles and are subject to the same laws as motorcycles. Anyone riding one on a public road must be at least 16 years of age, hold the appropriate driving licence, and ensure the vehicle is taxed and insured.
Similarly, Gardaí stressed that quad bikes are powerful machines capable of severely injuring or even killing a rider or another road user. When used on public roads, quads must be registered, taxed, roadworthy and insured, while the rider must also hold the correct driving licence.
The warning comes as Gardaí continue to monitor the use of off-road vehicles across Inishowen during the busy summer period.
Gardaí said their greatest concern is preventing tragedy.
“The last thing we want is to have to call to anybody’s home with bad news,” a Garda spokesperson said.
